History

Our mission is to supply a quality product and pleasant atmosphere to satisfy our customers. 1993 was the year that Prellwitz Produce was born. We planted 3 1/2 acres of strawberries in the mud that year, and fought the weeds all summer. By the end of summer we weren't sure why we were doing this. The next spring when we started picking berries, we decided that all the work was worth it. From then on we have increased to where we are picking between ten and fifteen acres per year. We have refined our weed control and the varieties we plant, but the taste of that first strawberry every year is what makes it all worth it.

As the name Prellwitz Produce indicates, we are more than just strawberries. In 1995 we started planting peas also, they are ripe about the same time as the strawberries and are a big hit with most customers. We have Sugar Snap, Shell, and Snow Peas with Sugar Snap being the most popular. About the same time, we started experimenting with sweet corn. After several years of trial and error we came upon some excellent varieties and better weed control methods and started selling quality sweet corn. We are now up to where we are planting 20 acres of sweet corn and having trouble keeping up with the demand. Not everything we have tried has worked. Raspberries, although being a a big hit with our customers, turned out to be more work than we had time to give. After several years of spending all of August and September picking raspberries, we now raise just enough for ourselves.

Our first venture into the produce business was with pumpkins. We started growing pumpkins with our neighbors, the Geislers in 1988 and we are still at it. The pumpkins are sold on the square in Madison as well as locally on the farm.

We are always trying new varieties and methods of growing our crops to supply our customers with the best product we can. Prellwitz Produce has provided us with an opportunity to sell direct to our customer and develop personal relationships with our customers.
