We're so glad that you're planning your trip to Prellwitz Produce!

Pre-picked versus pick-your-own produce

Prellwitz Produce offers both pre-picked (you purchase berries already picked) and pick-your-own (you head to the patch and pick them yourself) strawberries and peas. The per-pound pricing is more expensive for pre-picked produce to account for the additional labor cost. Check out our Pricing page for current rates.

The strawberry farm is a busy place during berry season, so we sell pre-picked and pick-your-own strawberries in different locations on the farm to reduce traffic congestion. Pre-picked strawberries are sold in the rounded gray Quonset shed on the east side of County Road E. For pick-your-own strawberries, head to the west side of County Road E and park in the large grassed area.  Check out our Location & Hours page for more information.

Strawberry season typically begins in mid-June and extends to early-July. As always, the season is weather dependent and we sometimes have to close for ripening during the initial days of the season, so be sure to check our website’s Berry Watch or call (920) 748-3005 before heading out to the farm. We make frequent updates so that the picking conditions are always current.

Pick-your-own strawberries are sold from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM on weekdays and until 4:00 PM on weekends (but, as always, check the Berry Watch before coming to the farm). When you arrive you will be provided a cardboard flat and/or quart container to use for picking, so you do not need to bring your own containers. We write your name on your strawberry flat so that it does not get misplaced during your visit.

Pre-picked berries are sold in 1-quart, 2-quart and 3-quart containers and by-the-pound flats. We need to allow time for our staff to pick fresh berries in the morning, so pre-picked berries are sold from 8:00 AM until we sell out or close for the day (but, as always, check our website before coming to the farm). We do not sell pre-picked strawberries picked the previous day. Check out our Hours page for more details.

On the Farm & At the Patch

A tractor and wagon will take you to the correct field, so you’ll even get a tour of the farm! Once you arrive in the field, you will be greeted by a Prellwitz Produce field runner who will assign a row and answer any questions you may have. Pick as much as you want and stop when you want. A flag color-coded by the strawberry variety will mark where you begin picking, and you’ll replace the flag in the field to mark where you finished picking. You will be asked to pick both sides of the row as “cleanly” of ripe berries as best you can. Please refrain from picking from a row that was not assigned to you.

If you decide to pick more than one flat of berries, you can notify the field runner and he/she will provide another flat for you. Your flat of strawberries (with your name on them) will be returned to the stand to get them out of the sun and to allow for easier transport later. Remember that strawberries are priced per-pound and not per-flat, so it’s better to use more flats to avoid a mound of squished strawberries packed into one flat.

When you’re done, you’ll be offered a tractor ride back to the stand. Prellwitz Produce staff will take it from there. We will unload berries from the wagon, weigh them and write the corresponding price in the corner of your flat. Tell us your name and your number of picked flats when you’re ready for checkout. (Remember, your additional flats were already brought back to the stand for you!) We even do our best to help you carry your flats to your vehicle.

From start to finish, we want berry picking at Prellwitz Produce to be a pleasant and memorable experience for you. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way, and we look forward to seeing you in the patch!
